Salsa Dip

Okay this is not Stephen, this is Hannah using this little pin on New York as an outlet for her love of New York music from the 60s. Salsa music born from the Cuban, Domingo and Puerto Rican influences in the latino neighbourhoods.

So the really cool guy called Ray Baretto is one of the dudes who supposedly brought this incredible music to New York, along with all the Cuban immigrants way back in ’61. Under this video on youtube someone actually wrote ‘smooth as gazpacho, hot as fire.’

and even better..

and the other dude is Tito Puente

and this leads me on nicely to more modern lovely sounding things that you all probably know lots about but I’m going to remind you about them anyway.

ONE.

Buena Vista Social Club. This reminds me of being very little and hearing this music mixed with the chitter chatter of my parents and friends at dinner parties and stuff. This was always my favourite song.

TWO

West Side Story – the most fabulous musical ever, (but I’m biased) based on New York in the 60s and the gang rivalry between the Puerto Rican immigrants and the Americans. This is the Gym Mambo scene where the leads Tony and Maria meet. This is THE amazing jazzy dancey scene from the musical, so if you want  an awesome taster from Bernstein’s amazing amazing score, click below.

And that is all. If only I didn’t live in Kingston and it was 1961 again.
