Song Discovery 8: 10.01.19
Written by Jimmy
Man — you guys are hitting me fast and furiously. You saw ‘A’s’ comments on African music. Well now ‘J’ wanted me to give you a spin of his latest purchases and what’s on the I pod. So here we go:
1. Bat for Lashes. I put on Daniel – love song and video. In fairness, Louise was singing these guys praises from Day 1. So ‘J’ and Louise claim them.
2. Nneka, Heartbeat. More from Africa (and we will do separate, longer song discovery) but ‘J’ insisted we put this in immediately. Also check out previous Song Discovery for ‘A’s additions here.
3. Monsters of Folk, Say Please. ELO? Love Dear God and don’t find a harp often in music. Shares name with the XTC classic, Dear God.
4. Prefab Sprout, Let There Be Music from their new album. I say ‘go Paddy’, and Andy says ‘Go Newcastle’ (Witton Gilbert?). Added The King of Rock and Roll for one important reason — it mentions Albequerque New Mexico, where I was born. So does Frank Zappa in The Jazz Discharge Party Hats — how’s that for Trivia?????
5. Wilco. I included their live version of War on War. And then had to add You and I. Which raises a ‘boys list’ issue, which is to name all the songs that use the subject form of ‘I’ incorrectly instead of ‘me.’ I’ll try to get a list started but we might have to have a newsletter contest on this one and give away a hoodie. For starters and it’s even in the title, let’s go with Jessica Simpson’s Between You and I (my mother so beat this out of me, that stuff like this is finger nails on a chalkboard), or Redemption Song with ‘Old pirates yes they Rob I’ (but that is fully forgiven in context). Anyone – no more time to waste on this. Great link to Songs with Bad Grammar.
Okay. That’s it. Too much time at Hong Kong airport!
