Why Abubilla Music? (The name not concept)
Written by Jimmy
First rule in marketing — pick a name that everyone can pronouce. That is one explanation for why Gigli failed commercially. But it actually just sucked. So, Abubilla music is ridiculously bad as a brand label. Because none of us know how to say it. For the record it is A-BU-BE-YA, according to Louise who is an expert on all things. Notwithstanding a slight bit of evidence that it is actually pronounced A-BU- VE – YA . So you get it wrong on the first B being a B and second being a V. And then the ll goes to a ya. Great!
So why did we do this? It all comes down to the pool. The pool in the villa in Spain has a Abubilla tiled into the bottom. And the bird looked cool. And it felt like it would look really cool on a guitar, bringing together Spain and music. Only later did we realise it looked a bit like the bird in the Woodstock logo. And that seemed very cool. And the villa is named Abubilla. So it always seemed like it should be Abubilla Music. At least while I was swimming laps over the tiled bird.
But it was always a placeholder and when we went to start naming things we all agreed we had to change it — primarily because all of us said it differently and still do. It was our little YAWEH or Valdimort. We could write it but no one could say it. So we had this big naming thing and went nuts trying to find a better name. And we couldn’t. And we liked the logo bit. And we decided no one talks about labels anyway, they talk about bands and songs and album titles. So, it is Abubilla. And David Roth made a cool logo. And Rob changed the guitar. And you, our only fan (you know who you are), will be able to add your own version to its pronounciation. And that is okay. Let it be and all.
I’m sorry, but you can’t pronounce a ‘b’ as a ‘v’.
