25 Handy Words that Simply Don’t Exist in English

Written by

Well.  Having completed a small little junket that has taken me from South Africa to Ethiopia to the Mid East to Australia and finally to China, Iwas particularly struck by a nice little blog that is all about ‘perfect’ words in other languages that we wish we had in English.

First, here’s the link and I recommend you discover your favourites.  In the meantime, here are 3 of mine:

  1. Kummerspeck (see comments, not in original list):  refers to the pounds gained while eating under emotional stress.  Literally:  Grief Bacon.
  2. Forelsket (Norway):  The euphoric experience of first being in love
  3.  L’esprit de l’escalier (French): usually translated as “staircase wit,” is the act of thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late to deliver it

Leads to a simple thought:  Having recovered from Forelsket, I recognised her for what she was, nothing more than L’esprit de l’escalier, and now I wallow in my Kummerspeck.

Thanks for the cuddle

Jimmy
