Golden Gate Bridge is 75 and I’m here to celebrate…
Written by Jimmy
As I continue my world tour, I’ve gone from Hong Kong to San Francisco, via London. This is no smarter than London to Melbourne via Ethiopia, which was my adventure two weeks ago. The good news is I arrived in time to celebrate the 75th Birthday of the Golden Gate Bridge. So here are three fun facts about the bridge:
- Unlike the majority of us as we age, the bridge has actually lost weight, going from 811.5 M kgs down to 804.7 M kgs due to a re-decking in 1986. (Interestingly, I’m going through a re-decking – hair loss – but have not found the same corresponding weight loss)
- On May 27th 2012, Mickey Hart (drummer from the Grateful Dead) played the bridge… a project he always wanted to do. It was very successful but he was helped by a lot of ‘roadies’. (Ba da boom, I’m here all week)
- The bridge has been featured in at least 54 major movies (including 4 Star Trek movies) and 5 songs, 40% of which appear to be about suicide jumpers which is not cheery. Sadly, it is the most popular site on earth for suicides
Teenage Dirtbag does not refer to the Golden Gate Bridge, which isn’t really a fun fact, but let’s me plug Tati’s video:
Well, that’s it then.
