Smoking ban? Think about the music! Smoking Band is more like it.

Written by

Over the weekend, the press reported that a third of smokers who quit thanked the smoking ban in part for contributing to their decision (click here).    I won’t comment on the pros/cons of smoking, although my vodka tonics sure taste better in smoke free pubs, but I will point out the a number of my favourite songs involve smoking (as always on line, there’s a number of Top 100 lists here) .     My countdown:

10.  Smoking in the Boys Room, Brownville Station.  Not really a favorite but a rite of passage.

9.  Tex Williams, Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette (gotta love a guy who hates cigarettes because it effects his gambling)

8.  Cigarette Smoke, Artic Monkeys

7.  Cigarettes and Alcohol:  Oasis.

6.  Three Cigarettes in the Ash Tray.  Simple, and perfect, lyrics.

5.  Cigarette Duet, Princess Chelsea.  Best song in a hot tub since our own Agatha’s 18th

(Before we go on, her’es our hot tub song)

4.  Smelling cigarettes, the Fiery Furnaces… A lost little Gem

3.  Sly Cigarette, Tiny Tim.  A very lost, little…gem.

2.   Cigarettes and Coffee, Otis Redding

1.  This is the main reasons to keep cigarettes in our lives, Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk, Rufus Wainwright:

Now, if we extended this to songs about pot or songs that mention cigarettes, then the list changes dramatically.  That will wait for another day, but in each category, here is a song in top 5.

If this were about pot, ‘Don’t Bogart that Joint’, Little Feat:

And if it was songs mentioning smoking, my goodness, that is a long list, but we would feature:  A Day in the Life, the Beatles (went upstairs and had a smoke, somebody smoke and I went into a dream).  Might cover pot as well…
